Zoom is one of the best video conferencing software available for free. It gained popularity during the Corona pandemic.
This is the guide you in Kenya to get started with Zoom meetings.
First, you need to download the app. Either to your phone or computer. Do not worry because I will show you how to do both.
How to download Zoom on Phone
Here is something to note:
If you are joining a zoom meeting, you don’t need zoom app installed on your computer.
However, if you are the host, you will need to install the Zoom app on your computer.
But of course, you need it installed on your phone (if you are using the phone to join the meeting).
To download zoom to your phone, go to https://zoom.us/download. This is the download center for Zoom.
Here, you will get all the downloads you need, both for the mobile and computer, and even zoom browser extensions.
Depending on your type of phone:
- Click 1 if using iOS or
- Use 2 if using Android.
The links take you to respective app stores.

How to host or join zoom meetings on Zoom mobile app
To join or host a meeting, open the app.
You will need a Zoom account if you have one, click Sign in
If not, follow these steps to create an account.
Click on sign up button
Consider this, you actually do not need an account to join a meeting even on mobile. Click on the gear tab to join a meeting without signing in.
1. Tap on sign up
2. Provide the email address that you’d like to use for this zoom account, followed by your first and last name.
3. Agree to T&S by ticking “I agree to the Terms of Service.
4. Finally, click on ‘sign up’ to create an account.
You just created a zoom account.
Now that you have a zoom app on your phone, let’s install it also on your computer.
How to download zoom on a computer
To download and install the Zoom app on your computer, follow these steps:
Go to the same download center one mentioned earlier https://zoom.us/download.
You should see the Zoom client for meetings
Tap on Download and it starts automatically. Choose the location you’d like to store the file. Once done, you will see a file known as a zoom installer.
Click on it to initiate the installation process.
The zoom app will open automatically as soon as the installation is complete.
How to sign in to zoom on a computer
With the desktop app installed, its time to sign. Follow these steps to log in. remember you will need an account (if you are the host).
Open the app:
If you are joining a meeting, it is not a must to sign in. Go ahead and click Join a Meeting now.
Provide the meeting ID, or link, your name, then choose settings as preferred, finally tap on Join.
If want to start a zoom meeting, you need to create an account or sign in if you have one already.
You will need the email used to open account and the password.
Alternatively, you can use other accounts like Facebook, Gmail, or SSO to log in.
How to create zoom account on the computer
If you don’t have an account, go ahead and click on Sign Up Free.
You will be redirected to the Zoom website.
To start the signup process, you will be asked to provide some information such as your DOB.
Just like on mobile zoom mobile app, provide email here
Finally, click on Sign Up.
A confirmation email will be sent to the email you just provided, so make sure it is valid.
Open the email and locate the message from no-reply@zoom.us
Open the message and click on the link to confirm your account
They will ask if you are acting on behalf of the school. Then type your name, email, and choose a password.
When done, click continue to complete the process.
How to start a zoom meeting in Kenya
When the app is completely open, you will see a window like one below.
Click on New Meeting to start a zoom meeting.
This is what you should see:
1. Use this button to access audio settings
2. Click here to turn on and off the video
3. Handle meeting security settings here including waiting rooms, and managing what participants can and can’t do
4. Shows the number of participants.
Tap here to invite others
Invite using contacts
Copy the invite link or the invitation message.
Alternatively, you can use email.
Just choose the carrier and the email will open up
Choose the recipients, and click send. You can add your own words there as well.
5. Chat here. When you click on it, a chat box opens up to your right.
Choose who to send the message among the participants. And even send files.
Click on the three dots to access meeting chat settings.
6. Use this button to share the screen.
Also, click on the drop up menu to access the settings.

9. Tap here to end the meeting.

How to join a zoom meeting
If you want to join a zoom meeting, you will need to be invited.
On the invitation message, there will meeting ID and password.
Click on ‘Join.’
You will see a window like one below
Provide meeting ID, enter your name, decide whether to join with audio and video on, then tap on Join.
If you have used zoom before, access the meeting ID’s history by tapping on the small drop-down menu.
How to schedule a zoom meeting
You can schedule a zoom meeting, here is how.
1. Sign in to your Zoom web portal.
2. Click Schedule a Meeting
3. Choose the date and time of your meeting.
4. (Optional) Select any other settings you would like to use.
5. Click Schedule.
